Move in Day

Sage was a freshman in college and Lugo was an RA (unfortunately) helping with check-in that day. As luck would have it, Sage ended up rooming with one of our now best mutual friends — who was also an RA. That’s where we were first introduced. We had met, but the sparks between us still hadn’t taken place. The story had started, we just didn’t know it yet.

Lugo even tried starting a book club with Sage, but it never really took off although she did lend him a book. And as life would have it, Sage eventually had to move back to Seattle.

The letter

Almost a year later once Sage was back in Boise, Lugo didn’t want to miss his chance again — so he wrote her a letter and had their mutual friend deliver it. After a few very delayed exchanges, Sage decided to take matters into her own hands and asked for his number directly.

First Date

We were originally planning on waiting until Valentine’s Day, but we were both too excited. Lugo asked Sage to go on a date and then did what all true gentlemen do — parked at the local Walmart and talked for three hours. After that, Lugo asked Sage where she wanted to eat. She responded that she didn’t care and wasn’t “picky” (she is). At the time, Sage was also a vegetarian… and Lugo took her to Dave’s Hot Chicken.

Lugo took Sage to Helen B. Lowder Park for her very first picnic date, where we made things official — with Maisie there to witness it all.

"I love you"

We said “I love you” out loud for the first time — even though we both already knew it.

The Proposal

We have a long-standing tradition dating back to the very first summer we started dating — taking a trip together each year. The first year was Yellowstone, the second was Cannon Beach, and by the third, Lugo got to see where Sage grew up in Seattle. During that trip, we made our way to Forks — the land of werewolves and vampires (Twilight, go Team Edward) — where Lugo proposed.

The Big Day

It’s not just about fireworks — over the past four years, we have taken a trip together every summer, and after getting engaged last year during our 4th of July trip, we felt like the 4th was the perfect date to celebrate nuestra historia.
